A series of performance/documentation video washing Japanese flags repeatedly around the world
Washing Hinomaru (the national flag of Japan) is a performance of a ceremony, conducting the repeated washing, line-drying, ironing, and folding of a number of Hinomaru flags. The line drying of the flags doubled as their display. The flags and the act takes a role of mirror and many interpretation for the performance can exist depending on a viewer’s political view. z
Satoshi Koganezawa commented that “the work is connected to the environment and strong enough to change the landscape.” “The performance is simple and refreshing but the act of washing Japanese flag can be as aggressive as washing Japan as a country itself. Some may be reminded of the words by Ryoma Sakamoto the end of Edo-period in 19 Century, “I would like to wash Japan again”.
「Washing Hinomaru
